FAQ
1. Does a gun case count as a checked bag?
You may transport unloaded firearms in a locked soft/hard-sided bag as checked baggage only. Declare the firearm and/or ammunition to the airline when checking your bag at the ticket counter. The soft/hard-sided bag must completely secure the firearm from being accessed. Locked soft/hard-sided bag that can be easily opened are not permitted.
2. Is it OK to store guns in a soft case?
If you properly store your case in a cool, dry area, you shouldn't have a problem keeping your gun in a soft case long term. If you plan to store your guns in your case for a long time, it couldn't hurt to throw some desiccant in with your case.
3. How long should my rifle bag be?
The most popular rifle case lengths for AR-15 rifles are 36″ and 42″ rifle cases, as these two sizes fit most barrel length configurations. You definitely don't want to get something that's too loose or too tight on your rifle and gear.
4. What is the foam called in gun cases?
Polyurethane
The two types of foams that are commonly used in firearm cases for shipping and storage are polyurethane and polyethylene. Polyurethane is a soft, open-cell foam that offers good cushioning and shock absorption. It is easy to custom shape and fabricate so that it perfectly fits a custom firearm case.
