About the Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday that takes place on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. This year, it falls on June 8. The festival is celebrated to honor Qu Yuan, a revered poet and minister from the Warring States period, who is remembered for his patriotism and contributions to Chinese literature.

Historical Background

Qu Yuan served as an advisor in the state of Chu and was known for his loyalty and dedication to his country. However, due to political intrigue and corruption, he was exiled. In despair, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. The local people, who admired him, raced out in their boats to save him or recover his body. They also threw rice into the river to distract fish from eating his body. These actions gave rise to the customs of dragon boat racing and eating Zongzi (sticky rice dumplings).

Customs and Traditions

  • Dragon Boat Racing: The most iconic event of the festival, dragon boat races are held on rivers and lakes, symbolizing the attempts to rescue Qu Yuan and scare away evil spirits.

  • Eating Zongzi: These traditional sticky rice dumplings, wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves, are enjoyed during the festival. They can be filled with various ingredients such as red bean paste, dates, salted egg yolk, pork, and mushrooms.

  • Hanging Mugwort and Calamus: Bundles of mugwort and calamus are hung on doors and windows to ward off evil spirits and bring good health.

  • Drinking Realgar Wine: This traditional alcoholic beverage is believed to protect against diseases and evil spirits.

We hope you take this time to enjoy the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Dragon Boat Festival. Should you have any urgent matters during this period, please ensure they are addressed before the holiday begins.

Wishing everyone a joyful and safe Dragon Boat Festival!

Best regards,
